Job Description

A number of EU member states have agreed to accept 40,000 Afghan refugees.

EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Yelva Johansson confirmed the news on Thursday (December 18th) after meeting with EU interior ministers.

According to a document seen by AFP, Germany will accept 25,000, the Netherlands 159,900, France 2,500 and 12 other countries a smaller number of new Afghan refugees.

Ms Johansen called the move an “effective act of solidarity” and called for more Afghans to be allowed to migrate in a controlled manner to prevent them from “arriving irregularly” in Europe.

Earlier, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) had asked the European Union to accept 42,500 Afghan refugees within five years, but some countries refused.

Some 85,000 Afghans have sought refuge in countries close to the European Union, and Taliban domination and severe drought are likely to force more people to flee the country.

Following the withdrawal of US troops and the return of the Taliban regime in August, 24 EU member states evacuated 28,000 people evacuated from Afghanistan.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grande, has warned that 85,000 Afghans living in dire conditions outside the EU are in need of resettlement and called on Europe to accept half of them.

According to the EU document, the 40,000 Afghans are part of a humanitarian and resettlement program for 60,000 people that EU member states have pledged to accept.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, large numbers of Afghans working with foreign forces and institutions, former government soldiers, human rights activists, civil society activists, journalists and artists have been fleeing Afghanistan for fear of Taliban retaliation.
