German Federal Foreign Minister Annalna Berbock said in Berlin on Thursday that bureaucratic barriers to visas should be removed to expedite the transfer of Afghans to Germany.

He added that there are still about 15,000 people left in Afghanistan that Germany has announced its readiness to accept. 135 German citizens are still living in Afghanistan.

These people need protection to be transferred to Germany, including human rights defenders and former Afghan local staff who have worked for the German Army, Foreign Office, or Ministry of Economic Development and Cooperation.

“They have not been forgotten,” he said. “We are working hard to bring them all to safety.”

Burbok also introduced an “action plan” for Afghanistan, which includes close cooperation with Afghan civil society actors to expedite the evacuation of those in need of protection. He explained that family reunification should also be simplified.

According to Berbock, the German federal government has relocated about 10,000 people from Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power, 5,300 of whom were flown by a German federal army plane.
