Germany to support 1000 at-risk Afghans

Germany’s Program For Afghans, under a new admission program, Germany intends to support 1000 Afghans monthly, which starts from October 2022 to 2025. The foreign minister stated on Monday. The program will mostly target those Afghans who are active in Human Rights, Women’s Rights, or those at risk because of their activeness in the sectors of media, education, justice, culture, politics, sport, or science.

Those Afghans who face inequality because of their gender, sexual orientation, or religion can also get an advantage from Germany’s program for Afghans.

“We will continue to fulfill this responsibility and have now created a structured framework for future admissions,” Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in a statement. “Based on established admission criteria, we are able to offer protection to particularly vulnerable people from Afghanistan.”

German Government will cooperate with civil society organizations to reach and find the targeted groups. The Government is intending to finish the program by ht end of October 2025. Apply Also for German Scholarships

“We are also working closely with civil society organizations to explore new avenues and forms of cooperation that have never been tried before,” she said. “For example, we now have a coordinating office to support civil society organizations taking part in the program.”

As part of international efforts, Germany has always been helping Afghans even after the Taliban Takeover. Compared to other EU member states, Germany has admitted by far the largest number of Afghan former local employees and other particularly vulnerable Afghans.

Almost 26,000 Afghan nationals have already taken advantage of similar admission programs provided by the German Government.

Civil Society Organizations to play a key role in Germany’s program for Afghans

Approximately 26,000 Afghans have already moved to Germany out of 38,000 people. However, the amount only consisted of those Afghans who had worked and assisted German Governmental organizations in Afghanistan. The key point is that the new criteria will only apply to those Afghans residing in Afghanistan regardless of whether they have worked with German organizations or not.

Many people in Afghanistan are living every day with the fear of persecution and violence — people who, like us, believed, lived, and fought for a better future for Afghanistan,” Baerbock said.

German civil society will also play a role in the program, with central coordination funded by the Interior Ministry.

“We will work closely with civil society organizations to carry out the program, using new ways and means of cooperation that have not previously existed,” Interior Minister Nancy Faster said.

Who is eligible for Germany’s Program for Afghans?

The program targets the following groups:

  • At-risk Afghans due to the fact that they are working for women’s rights and human rights.
  • Journalists
  • Scientists
  • Political activists
  • Judges
  • Tutors
  • Those who are persecuted for their gender, sexual orientation, or religion.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said the new humanitarian resettlement program is willing to give those persecuted by the Taliban “a bit of home and the chance of a free, self-determined and secure life.”

She acknowledged that it would be a “mammoth task” to implement the program, including safely getting applicants from Afghanistan to Germany.

“But we won’t let up,” she said.
